ANAHEIM, Calif. — A 23-year-old man driving a black Hummer on the southbound Orange (57) Freeway in Anaheim was wounded early Friday by a gunman who fired shots from a passing vehicle, authorities said. The shooting happened between Lincoln Avenue and Ball Road.
The gunman, who was possibly driving a Toyota Camry, fired multiple rounds into the driver side of the Hummer at about 2:10 a.m. and then sped off, Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said.
The driver of the Hummer was hit in the leg and was also injured by shattered glass. The injuries were not life-threatening. His two passengers were unhurt.
The wounded driver was able to pull off the freeway and drive to a gas station at Katella and Howell avenues, where he flagged down a passing Orange County sheriff’s deputy, Martinez said. The driver was transported to a hospital.
Martinez said investigators did not immediately determine if the shooting was a case of road rage or if there were events leading up to the incident.
The southbound 57 Freeway was closed near the location of the shooting for about an hour while authorities searched unsuccessfully for evidence, Martinez said. He said investigators would look for evidence again in daylight.
Martinez said no witnesses outside the Hummer have come forward.
